When Carl and Brian Rust began sharing song ideas cross-country they had no idea it would lead to a new band and a new album. The Rust Show is the band and their debut album is entitled “Have a Nice Trip, See You Next Fall!” It consists of 14 songs that range from quiet acoustic folk, to piano driven ballads, to Indy alternative rock. Carl lives in Elkhart Indiana and Brian lives in Beaverton (near Portland) Oregon. Carl is Brian’s uncle. They were in a band called Nine six eighT together in late 1990’s with Tim Hull and John Martin. They wrote a lot of songs and explored a lot of musical ideas, played some shows, but just drifted apart. Carl and Brian continued to pursue music separately. In 2013 Carl was listening to some old practice tapes of Nine six eighT and came across a fragment of a song called “High and Tall”. He was intrigued by it and fleshed it out with a chorus, bridge and additional verse. He sent it to Brian via the internet and Brian liked it. Brian sent Carl a song idea that ended up becoming “Yoo Hoo Ha Ha”. The process of sending ideas back and forth through the internet continued. Carl worked with Etna Green producer Jeremy Golden to record vocals and instruments and Brian worked in his home studio. In the summer of 2014 Carl took a Greyhound bus to Oregon and spent 10 days with Brian creating and polishing the songs that would become “Have a Nice Trip, See You Next Fall!” “The album seems to express a theme of renewal and rebirth, like Brian and I getting back together after all these years to create music again,” said Carl.
